Due to the old art, quite a few will be turned away, especially some of the people who are quite new to anime and manga. Despite the overall tone of the book being rather serious and grim, it would at times produce unexpected moments of good humour. This story could have been vastly more effective if the Japanese and Germans had been more realistic, especially if a genuine argument had been made. The copy I read had a note on the back to the effect of: the values expressed in this graphic novel is a product of the time it was *written*, and hasn't been changed to reflect modern values.

Usually, we assume awareness of the effect ideology will have on us is portrayed as sufficient to prevent its effects.

In keeping with Tezuka-sensei’s older style, the cover has an old-school design in four colors (orange, yellow, green, pink) with a creepy sketch of Hitler’s face on the front. Another high ranking Nazi official – Goebbels maybe – would take over and WW2 would continue forward. The dad, of course not fully understanding their import, doesn’t get around to looking at them and, through a bizarre sequence of events, ends up going back to Germany and straight into a concentration camp!

Zpráva pro Adolfa je komiksová (manga) pecka, kterou rozhodně musím doporučit komukoli, koho alespoň trochu zaujme. He's an excellent little Nazi student, but his mixed-race status (mom is Japanese, after all, and even though they're allies of the Germans, Hitler considers them an inferior race, too) and lingering doubts about this whole idea of the Jews being the enemy cause him problems along the way. In fact, the very existence of the Nazis in this story feels like apologetics, a way to prove that Japan wasn't bad because "Japan weren't the Nazis" -- almost as though the Japanese were victims of Axis necessity rather than active agents in their WW2 fate. This is one of the most stunning aspects of the story, not often explored honestly in literature, anymore. I am taken by the honesty with which Tezuka portrays a person's awareness of his own malleability, foreshadowed by a young Adolf Kaufmann not wanting to go to a Hitler Youth school, because he knows it will brainwash him to hate Jews--even though his best friend is Jewish. This book has been on my to-read list for a long time, and I finally decided to tackle it, due largely to my and Shea's decision to discuss this book (along with Muzuki's Hitler) for the November manga episode of the podcast. At first he’s your generic hero – good looking, upbeat, idealistic and he’s fighting for a good cause, to avenge his brother’s death and bring about the downfall of Hitler.To convey shadows, faces and bodies are often inked in black, which conveys a very stark impression. While Sohei initially thinks his little brother may have found a young frau, Isao's tone is clearly that of one who is troubled by topics much heavier than romance. The Manchurian campaign is to this day glossed over in Japanese textbooks (America is no less guilty of this sort of censorship of its history), but discussed openly in the story.
