About this deal

One of them, Isobel, died that weekend, rushing off after a row and attempting to drive over the causeway while the tide was rushing in (“Her vehicle had been swept from the causeway in the high tide of the equinox, tossed from the road like a toy by the wind and the waves”). A week after the night she chases but fails to catch a mysterious trespasser outside her town house, some unknown party texts Tempe four images of a corpse that looks as if it’s been chewed by wild hogs, because it has been.

The best recent crime and thriller writing – review roundup

The Darkest Evening reminds us that the novels are richer, fuller, and more satisfying than any episode of television can be…[Cleeves] is a master of the genre and if anything has gained a step over the years. Who doesn’t love “large and shabby” Vera Stanhope, the blunt detective in Ann Cleeves’s Northumberland police procedurals? The books never get too dark, never venture too far into dangerous territory, but aren’t outright cozy, either….

Cleeves crafts a clever central puzzle, then confers remarkable emotional complexity using her keenly drawn characters’ advancing age, wistful nostalgia, and thorny shared history. His crime spreads its tentacles throughout the novel, but Varvello is more interested in exploring its fallout – how his mother has never been able to move on, driven to despair by her son’s actions; how his father has struggled to survive; what it’s done to his older sisters. She learns that the newly deceased was recently fired from his job for misconduct and Vera knows that the friends are hiding something. So, here Philip was, a priest on the verge of retirement, an old believer, yet with no great desire to meet his maker.

There’d been no physical contact – it hadn’t come to that – but Philip had sensed the tension, which was so different from the weekend’s general mood of easy companionship. He closed his eyes again to remember Isobel and that argument which must surely have led to her death. A friend of mine once joked that the work of Ann Cleeves is the closest the crime-fiction genre comes to evoking ASMR — the euphoric, pleasant, spine-tingling sensation that’s all the rage on YouTube. The partners deliver a few punchlines of their own in this fast-moving story that’s replete with twists and danger. He’d stayed where he was, staring out of the window like a nebby old woman, waiting to see what would happen next.It was as inevitable as the water, which twice a day slid across the sand and mud of the shore until the causeway was covered. Anyway, the partners complement each other: Taylor is the more rational and level-headed, while Brodie blatantly disregards jurisdictional boundaries when he needs to. Eager to ID the killer and find out why early reviewers were commenting as they were, I turned to the book for the final chapters. The Rising Tide: A Vera Stanhope Novel Kindle Edition

He remembered the babies, who’d had no experience of life at all, the young who’d had no opportunity to change and grow. For fifty years a group of friends have been meeting regularly for reunions on Holy Island, celebrating the school trip where they met, and the friend that they lost to the rising causeway tide five years later.Rick may have lost his BBC hosting gig over sexual misconduct allegations, but he recently signed a lucrative book deal and didn’t leave a suicide note. The TV series and the books they are based on have become international sensations, capturing the minds of millions worldwide. The Rising Tide is published in the UK by Pan Macmillan: the hardback was published on 1st September 2022 (ISBN: 978-1-5098-8961-7), and the paperback on 16th March 2023 (978-1-5098-8965-5). Ann Cleeves is on top form in this atmospheric mystery that gradually expands to include more shifty characters on the mainland, and, on her tenth outing, you feel the pain beneath Vera’s blowsy bravado. But the hints of other crimes Tempe’s identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M.
