This book is so well written that I was often confused Johannes and Elsa and this feeling of insanity that surrounded them. Rather than reporting his parents to the authorities, Johannes keeps his discovery a secret, and soon becomes enamoured with Elsa. But if you stick with Caging Skies, you’ll get an entire era distilled into two people, a Tolstoyan marvel… Caging Skies re-creates an era from the inside, and lovers of the literary will find plenty to admire. Then, gradually, it seemed to part company entirely with the movie storyline and go into darker realms than I felt willing to go.

The female protagonist, particularly, begins as a victim, but soon she, too, becomes ugly and horrible. Then I received the script from Taika, and without him knowing anything, he’d changed the scene back to rabbits! Eventually we helped the withered bit of life into the new shell, with fragments sticking to its back. For the reader, drawn into the subtle interactions of the Betzler house, Leunens’ clear, elegant prose and sometimes blackly comic tone, this would be satisfying enough.
